Little Wonders Range Launched by First Aid Warehouse

Babyway International have developed a range of BPA (Bisphenol A) free baby feeding products which are the first of their kind in the UK . The Little Wonders BPA free range is available from First Aid Warehouse, the UK 's leading supplier first aid, medical and personal care products .

Baby feeding bottles are amongst many other products that are typically manufactured from polycarbonate plastic. Easily worked and moulded, Polycarbonate has been used in the production of housewares for some time due to its high temperature and impact resistance. In the manufacturing process of Polycarbonate, an organic compound called Bisphenol A (BPA) is used as a key monomer in the production of Polycarbonate plastic products.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been suspected of being hazardous to humans for some time and concerns about it's usage in housewares, namely food receptacles entered the headlines earlier in 2008 when reports were issued questioning its safety and products were removed from some retailers shelves.

Studies have been conducted to test the migration levels of BPA from polycarbonate articles into food and therefore identify the level of risk posed to consumers who use such products. The British Food Standards Agency published details of one of such studies which has identified that the risk of BPA migration is minimal, the results of the study can be found at the following URL: http://www.food.gov.uk/science/research/researchinfo/contaminantsresearch/contactmaterials/a03prog/a03projlist/a03036proj/

Despite this particular study identifying that the risk is ‘minimal under the worst foreseeable conditions' and other overwhelming evidence backing the safety of polycarbonate, parents are still naturally concerned about using these baby products. Understanding that some patents may be worried about the material content of their baby feeding bottles, Babyway International have developed and launched a range of BPA free baby feeding products. The Little Wonders BPA free range is the first of its kind available in the UK and includes baby bottles, baby table wear and baby dummies.

Car First Aid Kit from First Aid Warehouse

Road Safety and the First Aid Warehouse

The British Red Cross's ‘Don't be a Bystander' road safety campaign run in partnership with Toyota taught an amazing 259,000 young people life-saving first aid skills. The campaign proved to be such a great success that the car manufacturer has pledged £100,000 per year to fund further road safety first aid campaigns. First Aid Warehouse, the leading online supplier of first aid kits boasts a comprehensive range of motoring first aid kits specially designed for providing road side first aid.

The availability of basic first aid can be the difference between life and death after a road accident. According to the Red Cross, the provision of basic life support at the road side could prevent 85% of preventable pre-hospital hospital deaths from road accidents. The Don't be a Bystander campaign is going a long way towards tackling the lack of knowledge of life saving first aid techniques in young people, they have already taught over 250,000 young people these skills and reached another 500,000 plus with road safety and first aid messages.

The increase in general knowledge of first aid techniques is a fabulous benefit to every single person in the UK , and it could be argued that everybody should be taught these basic skills. Perhaps every private vehicle should have to carry a first aid kit. At present, only certain new private vehicles are sold equipped with first aid kits as there is no legal requirement in the UK for cars to carry car first aid kits.

Should a vehicle owner / driver have the desire to carry a vehicle first aid kit in their car or bike, purchasing a suitable first aid kit is easy. They can be purchased from a range of places but First Aid Warehouse, the UK 's premier supplier of first aid items and accessories, stock a range of motorist specific first aid kits that can be browsed and purchased online. Ordering online is secure and easy and purchases are delivered direct to the door.

Out Comes the Sun, Out Comes the Skin

As the nation flocks outdoors to enjoy the warmth of the summer, First Aid Warehouse are offer fabulous prices on the Burnshield range of emergency burn care products ideal for treating sunburn and those barbecue burns!

On gorgeous sunny days, the skin comes out, the barbecues come out and by the end of the day, the red sore patches and blisters do too! It's very important that care be taken in the sun but people rarely do. A lot of people are guilty of purposely not using any skin protection so that they can get that lovely tan, and a lot of people don't use any protection because they simply forget or don't realise how strong the sun's rays are. These people often end up with sunburn.

Excessive exposure to UV rays (ultra violet radiation) doesn't just burn your skin, leaving you sore, red, flaky or blistering, it is an important risk factor in the development of skin cancer. Each year around 8000 people in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma and the numbers are on the increase. Of course protection against the damaging UV rays is key, and Cancer Research UK are promoting this with the SunSmart Campaign but if you do burn, how would you treat it?

First Aid Warehouse is the official online distributor of Burnshield, a specialist emergency burn care range of products that have been designed to offer effective, fast acting cooling relief to burn injuries. Burnshield products absorb and dissipate heat, minimises shock and skin damage and reduces infection in open burn wounds. As the UK's premier online supplier of medical equipment and accessories, they stock Burnshield products and a range of other burn care and first aid products.

Treating Sunburn | 0 replies since Jul 17, 2008, 09:03 AM
John Kaduwanema:

First Aid Kit

You would treat a heat burn or scald with running cold water or a cooling burn relief product, so why not do the same with sunburn?

It's the time of year where millions are outside enjoying the fine weather but it's also the time of year when skin damaging ultraviolet rays are strong. If you don't take suitable precautions, the UV light can result in sunburn. Too much exposure to UV rays overheats the skin which results in it becoming red and painful and it may also peel or blister. Sunburn isn't always immediately noticeable and the pain may not be instant and could take hours to develop, but most people do tend to know when their skin is getting too hot.

A lot of people are likely to do nothing to sunburned skin, and a lot are likely to simply apply some moisturising lotion to help prevent the skin from peeling. But, when sustaining a burn or scald, for instance when cooking, the likelihood is that they would instantly go to treat the area with cold running water or a specialised burn treatment. So, why not with sunburn?

Burns can be categorised in different ways, for instance by the cause; Radiation burns, which include sunburn; Thermal Burns, including burns from flames and hot liquids; Chemical burns and Thermal Burns. The other method of categorising a burn is by the severity or depth; superficial (first degree), partial-thickness (second degree) and full thickness (third degree).

Sunburn is a radiation burn and tends to be superficial, which means that the top layer of skin, or epidermis, has been damaged. Even when the cause of burning has been removed, the burning heat process continues to be active in the skin and tissue and can continue to cause further damage, so it is important that the process be ended by effective cooling treatment. The burn area can be treated and cooled by running cool water over the effected area or by applying specially developed burn treatment liquids or dressings. It is important never to use anything other than cool water or specialised burn relief and to ignore the old wives tales such as applying butter to burns!

On long days out in the sun, it may be a good idea to carry some after-sun or burn relief lotion as cool running water isn't always available. A specialised burn product that is suitable for use on all forms of burns including sunburn, is Burnshield. The Burnshield product range and formula has been specially developed to cool and inhibit the progression of burns and to minimise further skin damage. The product formula is safe to use, non-toxic, non-irritant and CE approved.

The full Burnshield range is available from the official online distributor, First Aid Warehouse www.firstaidwarehouse.co.uk . As the leading online distributor of burn care products, first aid and medical equipment and accessories, First Aid Warehouse are able to offer low cost prices on a range of high quality products including the Burmshield range.

Increasing People's Chances | 0 replies since Jul 17, 2008, 08:52 AM

Cyclists First Aid Kit

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents identified that almost all road crashes involve at least one driver or motorcyclist, and very few only involve a pedestrian or pedal cyclist.

Drivers operate powerful vehicles at speed and are all guilty, at times, for forgetting how dangerous their vehicles can be. Not just for themselves, but for other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike. Motorists are often so wrapped up in the purpose of the journey and where they are going that they give little consideration to the actual processes of driving during the journey. It is however, unfair to only mention motorists, as other road users are also guilty of not giving appropriate consideration to the potential dangers when using roads.

True road safety is a responsibility of all road users, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. There is fault within each of these groups, and each will have cause to criticize the other for things such as; cyclists skipping lights, motorists not using indicators and pedestrians stepping into the road without looking.

Large amounts of people die on UK roads each year, approximately 3200 people in fact, with 500 of those being young people . The Red Cross has been running a campaign called ‘Don't be a Bystander' which has been creating awareness of road safety and has also been training young people basic life saving first aid skills. The Red Cross identified that up to 85% of preventable pre-hospital deaths from road accidents could be successfully avoided by administering basic first aid to the casualty before the emergency services arrive. Clearly, if more people had knowledge of life saving basic first aid, more people would survive road accidents.

Having first aid knowledge or skills is obviously the primary requirement but having access to the correct first aid kit is also important. First aid kits will contain variations of standard product mixes but those designed for storage in a car or vehicle are likely to have slightly different contents. For instance, a specific motorist kit may contain a greater quantity, or larger sized absorbent dressings designed for larger injuries, resuscitation face shields for administering CPR and emergency foil blankets for keeping accident victims warm.

A popular online retailer of first aid and medical equipment is First Aid Warehouse www.firstaidwarehouse.co.uk . Included in the extensive first aid kit range, First Aid Warehouse stock a range first aid kits designed to meet the needs of both public and private motorists. As the UK 's premier supplier of first aid items and accessories, the product range can be browsed and purchased online with delivery direct your door.

Japanese Study on Hypertension | 0 replies since Mar 17, 2008, 08:50 AM
John Kaduwanema:

Japanese Study concludes that home blood pressure monitoring results in better control of hypertension. The First Aid Warehouse increases its range of British Hypertension Society validated blood pressure monitors, including A&D, Microlife and Omron brands.

Measuring blood pressure at home can give up to 50% better control of hypertension.

In a recent study, published in the Journal of Human Hypertension 2008, Japanese patients taking anti-hypertensive medication were monitored by researchers. Of these, 77% regularly monitored their blood pressure at home, and 23% did not. Those patients who took their blood pressure at home, were 46% more likely to hit a target of 140/90 mmHg in the morning, 36% more likely in the evening and 23% more likely when having their blood pressure checked in the doctor's surgery.

According to another study at the University of Birmingham, almost 10% of the adult population now take their own blood pressure at home, the most likely self-testers being retired, university educated , and living in an affluent area . Those who monitor their blood pressure at home are more likely to use other home tests, such as glucose and cholestrol.

Dr Richard McManus, study leader and senior lecturer in primary care at the university, said the benefits of self-testing included”better control of hypertension and a reduced 'white coat' effect.”

Mild to moderate exercise can also help in the fight against hypertension and weight loss, with pedometer use encouraging people to monitor their progress, and go just that little bit further. Researchers at Stanford University noted that results were even better when patients were given a daily step goal to achieve, with an increased activity of over 2000 steps a day in pedometer users compared with controls. Systolic blood pressure fell by an average of 3.8mmHg

Study leader Dr Dena Bravata, said: ‘Pedometers can increase users' physical activity by about a mile per day. They are particularly useful for sedentary people.

The First Aid Warehouse is committed to enabling people to monitor their blood pressure accurately and effectively, only stocking monitors from manufacturers who have products validated by the British Hypertension Society. These manufacturers include A&D, Microlife and Omron. First Aid Warehouse is the UK's premier supplier of medical equipment and accessories, a one-stop shop for high quality, great value First Aid Kits, Blood Pressure Monitors and First Aid Equipment and Medical Supplies for medical professionals and the care industry and the general public. Higher IQ for Premature Babies Fed on Nutrient Rich Diet | 0 replies since Mar 17, 2008, 08:47 AM

Brain Power for Babies- Higher IQ in Later Life for Premature Babies Fed On Nutrient Rich Diet. First Aid Warehouse now stock a comprehensive range of Baby care equipment from the Little Wonders® range

Sharon Mason

Around one in ten babies in the UK are born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy). Usually there is little risk to the mother, but the implications for the baby's health and development can be profound.

Researchers at Great Ormond Street Hospital have recently discovered that premature babies fed on a high protein diet grow up to be more intelligent with a higher IQ. They followed a group of 76 children born several weeks prematurely in the 1980s. The babies were randomly given either high nutrient milk enriched with extra protein, fat, calcium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, and several other micronutrients, or a standard formula.

By the time the children had reached 15 years of age, those babies fed on the nutrient rich milk had an average verbal IQ score eight points higher than those fed on normal formula or breast milk.

The boys also had a bigger caudate nucleus in their brain, which is associated with memory and learning.

Dr Elizabeth Isaacs, the research leader, said it showed "that the structure of the human brain can be influenced by early nutrition."

"The fact that early nutrition may programme the development of specific brain structures is of fundamental biological importance," she added.

All premature babies are now fed the equivalent of the high-nutrient diet, but it is still uncertain whether it is one particular nutrient, or a combination of them all that is responsible for the developmental differences.

The premature baby charity Bliss, has welcomed this latest research which is to be published in the March edition of Paediatric Research.

"These findings are potentially very interesting and could have an influence on current thinking about how, when and what to feed premature infants. The care that premature babies receive in their first few hours and days of life is crucial and will shape their future development and quality of life. Anything that improves outcomes for these vulnerable babies is very welcome."
